Serendipity is the process of finding something useful, valuable or just generally “good” without actually looking for it. Throughout the history of invention and discovery serendipity has functioned as a sort of Freudian unconscious, leading – or, perhaps better, tricking – the curious human mind onto unexpected novelty.

And yet, only recently have we started to become truly aware of the crucial role of serendipity in our attempts to creatively grasp toward the future….

This symposium will explore the possibilities and imaginaries generated through the intersection of two urban agendas.

The ‘Smart City’ is concerned with the application of digital infrastructure, sensors and data capture devices, and large scale computing power to previously distinct ‘social’ and governmental dimensions of urban life.

The ‘Creative City’ attempts to mobilise culture and creativity for city branding, urban regeneration and cultural industries growth, which also point to new forms of urban planning and governance.

Is there another kind of urban culture and economy being made possible beyond the tightly controlled formats of the Smart City/ Creative City? What might that look like?

EKV – tripreport: Michel van Dartel visits Congo – 21-22 april

On invitation of the Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC) and the Institute for Human Activities (IHA), Michel van Dartel, professor at the Research Group Human-Centred Creation (EKV) at Avans University visited the Lusanga International Research Centre for Art and Economic Inequality (LIRCAEI, a joint initiative of CATPC and IHA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for an event titled The Repatriation of The White Cube.

The event inaugurated a quintessential “White Cube”, that the renowned Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) designed for LIRCAEI, built on the site of a former Unilever palm oil plantation in the village of Lusanga in the south west of the DRC. EKV/UvT – Masterclass Sensory Augmentation

Samen met de Universiteit Tilburg organiseerde het lectoraat Mensgericht Creëren een masterclass op het STRP festival 2017. Deze masterclass in zogeheten Sensory Augmentation vormde onderdeel van een langdurige samenwerking met de Universiteit
Tilburg waarin wordt beoogd een dialoog te ontwikkelen tussen wetenschappelijk en artistiek onderzoek naar menselijke waarneming.

EKV – 25.03 > 02.04 – STRP – The Entangled Body

Onderzoekers Marcel van Brakel en Wander Eikelboom, respectievelijk verbonden aan de lectoraten Mensgericht Creëren en Autonoom Maken, presenteren op de STRP Biënnale 2017 in Eindhoven de installatie The Entangled Body, door hen ontwikkeld als onderdeel van SYNAPTIC THEATRE, een internationaal onderzoek- en ontwerpproject van de Nederlandse crossmedia groep POLYMORF.

In THE ENTANGLED BODY kun je een ‘datadouble’ van jezelf laten maken die je niet kunt zien maar alleen kunt voelen. Een EEG scan leest de emoties in je brein uit en zet ze om in data, die vervolgens met behulp van de meest geavanceerde mid-air haptic touch technologie niet zichtbaar maar voelbaar worden. Met je vingertoppen en je handen voel je je emoties bewegen in de lucht voor je en kun je een dialoog aangaan met je brein. Je ‘geestlichaam’ wordt tastbaar. Zoals spiritisten aan het eind van de 19e en begin 20e eeuw fotografie gebruikten om de realiteit van de geestwereld aan te tonen, wordt in THE ENTANGLED BODY touch technologie ingezet om het huidige geloof in medische visualisatietechnieken en de dataficatie van het menselijk lichaam te bevragen en op te rekken.

In Defence of Serendipity is a lively and buccaneering work of investigative philosophy, treating the origins of ‘serendipity, accident and sagacity’, as riddles and philosophical concepts that can be put to a future political use.
Taking in Aristotle, LSD, Tony Blair, techno-mysticism and the sharing economy, Olma challenges the prevailing faith in the benevolence of digital technology and rejects the equation of innovation with entrepreneurship. He argues instead that we must take responsibility for the care of society’s digital infrastructure and prevent its degeneration into an apparatus of marketing and finance. The alternative is a situation in which the only kind of freedom that remains to us is the freedom to be exploited.

Sebastian Olma is an Amsterdam-based author, critic, and sometime consultant with a critical view on creative industries policies. He is Professor for Autonomy in Art, Design & Technology at St. Joost Art Academy and Avans University of Applied Sciences in Breda, The Netherlands. Trained in a variety of social sciences and humanities at universities in Germany, the US, and Great Britain, he holds a PhD in cultural sociology from Goldsmiths, University of London. He’s worked at the University of Amsterdam and was research fellow at the Institute of Network Culture.

Paul Frissen is Professor of Public Administration at Tilburg University. He has published widely on political philosophy and the state. He is also dean and chairman of the board of the Netherlands School for Public Administration. Amongst his books are De fatale staat (2013), on the reconciliation with tragedy that is often necessary in politics and Het geheim van de laatste staat (2016), a fundamental critique on the longing for transparency.

Joke Hermes works as a lecturer Media, Culture and Citizenship at Hogeschool Inholland and is a lecturer Television and Cross-media Culture at the University of Amsterdam. She is a founding co-editor of the European Journal of Cultural Studies. As an audience researcher she focuses on discourse analysis and participant design research. She has published widely in the field of media, (popular) culture, identity, representation and social power relations. Her dissertation on reading women’s magazines is a classic text in qualitative audience research. She is also co-author of the textbooks Televisiestudies (with Maarten Reesink) and Leefwerelden van Jongeren (with Pauline Naber and Arjan Dieleman, ed.).

Max Dovey [UK] is 28.3% man, 14.1% artist and 8.4% successful. His performances confront how computers, software, and data affect the human condition. Specifically he is interested in how the meritocracy of neo-liberal ideology is embedded in technology and digital culture. He holds a MA in Media Design & Communication from Piet Zwart institute and a BA in Fine Art : Time Based Media from University Arts London. His research is in “liveness” and real-time computation in performance and theatre.

This event starts at 20.00h, bar will be opened until 23.00h. Entrance fee is 3 EUR and includes one free drink. The entrance fee is payable by cash or pin.
